This Indescribable Gift

Christmas I believe is the most special time of year.  It is a time of love, one of preparation, hope, joy, peace! Of course not everyone would think that it’s the most wonderful time of year. They may have lost a loved one, their family may have been torn apart or there is no means to buy gifts for their children or even have food for Christmas dinner! Yes, there are desperate situations in the world and maybe in your own neighborhood! And for those of us who have it better…what a great time of year to reach out and show some love and kindness!

Some of you may be asking where do we find our hope and what is the meaning of Merry Christmas?  As much as we love to give and receive gifts at Christmas there is more to the reason that we celebrate, there is a much greater gift that was given to us so many years ago. Because of God’s love for the world He sent His one and only Son. He was conceived by the Virgin Mary and she gave birth to baby Jesus – Emmanuel – “God with us”. He came for you and for me, to give us hope and a reason to live! He is the ultimate gift, and the best part is He came as a free gift!  There is nothing that we can do to deserve this gift, there is no purchase we just need to freely receive it!

When we put our trust in God he has an effect on us, when we believe that He is the son of God and realize that we need Him and His forgiveness in our lives we receive salvation and eternal life. (John 3:16). Jesus came to give His life for us all!!  It says, “She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because He will save his people from their sins."(Matthew 1:21 NIV) Who can add to Christmas or this indescribable gift?

“The perfect motive is that God so loved the world.
The perfect gift is that He gave His only Son.
The only requirement is to believe in Him.
The reward of faith is that you shall have everlasting life.
~ Corrie Ten Boom

Jesus, is God’s greatest gift to the world. Especially at Christmas, this familiar verse and phrase can serve as a refreshing reminder. His gift to us is indescribable. Jesus came to earth for you and me. Truly it was through His birth, life, and death on earth, that Jesus paid the full purchase price for our salvation. “God demonstrated His own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8 NIV).  And “Dayspring” said it so well ….’We can easily slip into a place of taking Christ’s free gift for granted. Commercialism and secular interests steal the spotlight, and we miss the opportunity to respond to the message of Christ in any truly meaningful way.’

When we receive this gift it will change us, it will give our life more meaning and beauty. You will see more clearly what God’s purpose is for you, it’s indescribable!

The one thing that we can quickly forget is that when we receive His gift we can also offer our lives in return. “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." (Mark 10:45 NIV) When we have received this gift we will want to share it with others as well!  How will you share it?

May you have joy in knowing this indescribable gift can give you “life” this Christmas season!

Merry Christmas!!

“Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!” 2 Cor. 9:15 NIV
